The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is pleased to announce the appointment of Bradley Ford, M.D. Ph.D, to the ABPath’s Test Development and Advisory Committee (TDAC) for Medical Microbiology beginning in 2024. The TDACs are responsible for developing and reviewing the ABPath certification exam questions that assess and certify a physician’s education, knowledge, experience, and skills in order to provide high-quality care in pathology.

Dr. Steven Offer joined UI Pathology on January 8, 2024 as an Associate Professor. Dr. Offer received his Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology & Genetics from the University of Minnesota in 2009.

Neuropathologist Marco Hefti, MD, and other experts investigate possible causes for sudden unexplained death in childhood, the Associated Press reports.

This program recognizes members for distinguished careers and outstanding scientific contributions as well as their service to AAI and the immunology community. It honors active, long-term members (25 or more years) who have demonstrated one or more of the following: excellence in research accomplishment in the field of immunology; exceptional leadership to the immunology community in academia, foundations, nonprofits, industry, or government at a national or international level; notable distinction as an educator.

Dr. Thomas Waldschmidt has retired from the University of Iowa Department of Pathology after almost 40 years with the Department, 35+ years as a faculty member. He has been appointed Professor Emeritus of Pathology.

Dr. Ashutosh Mangalam received a four-year VA Merit Award entitled “Role of HLA Class-II Polymorphism in the Regulation of Host-Microbiota Symbiosis”. HLA class-II genes and gut microbiota have emerged as important genetic and environmental factors linked with the pathobiology of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that affects around one million people in the US.

Stephanie Peterson successfully defended her PhD thesis in early October and completed the Immunology PhD program. Stephanie’s thesis is entitled A tale of two diets: Divergent effects of fructose and isoflavones in a mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis. She performed her thesis work in the laboratory of Dr. Ashutosh Mangalam where she examined the effects of fructose on the gut microbiome, immune system, and disease outcomes in a mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis. Additionally, Stephanie investigated potential mechanisms of isoflavone-mediated protection in these mouse models.
