The Department of Pathology's microbiology laboratory is a full-service laboratory offering comprehensive testing for the diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Infectious disease may be acute or chronic and may be caused by a variety of microorganisms that may include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Our staff of experienced clinical microbiologists has been trained in the most up to date diagnostic methods for the detection and testing of microbial pathogens in the areas of:

  • Molecular methods
  • Mycology
  • Mycobacteriology
  • Parasitology
  • Virology

Education support

The microbiology laboratory provides specialized support for the Divisions of Clinical Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases. The faculty also directs active research programs with an emphasis on the epidemiology, mechanisms and detection of antimicrobial resistance.

The microbiology laboratory has an extensive medical education program that includes the training of residents, fellows, medical students and medical laboratory science (MLS) students.
