Carver College of Medicine held their annual Medical Student Research Conference in September where medical students had the opportunity to present research projects they worked on with their mentors. Two mentees, Sandeep Singh Dhingra, MS and Cyrus Barati, BS received the Richard G. Lynch Award for Excellence in Pathology Research for the research they conducted in our labs.

Cyrus is a second-year medical student and was mentored by Shujie Yang, PhD this summer as a research intern. He received the award for his work, “Reversing Aging-Associated Epigenetic Silencing in Endometrial Cancer Using Combined 5-Azacytidine and Romidespin.”

Sandeep is a fourth-year medical student in Ashutosh Mangalam, PhD’s lab and presented his work, “Co-occurring Autoimmune and Immune-Mediated Diseases in a University of Iowa MS Cohort Reveal a Broad Systemic Inflammatory Phenotype.”

The Richard G. Lynch Award for Excellence in Pathology Research is awarded to medical students to recognize outstanding pathology research in honor of Richard G. Lynch, MD. Dr. Lynch was a distinguished researcher, mentor, scholar, and the former Chairman of Pathology at the Carver College of Medicine and wrote the initial planning grant that resulted in the NIH designation of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
