The Department of Pathology will award two scholarships each year, on behalf of the Marilyn Ohm-Smith Pathology Student Scholarship Fund.

This scholarship will go to current University of Iowa graduate students in the Pathology MS or Experimental Path PhD programs, studying microbiology, infectious disease or cancer.

A $2000 scholarship will be awarded to two students for help cover expenses for attending professional conference or other training opportunity.

It is the donor’s preference that the scholarship be given to students who demonstrate: a) financial need, b) high academic merit, c) is the first member of their family to attend college and/or d) faced challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances.

Evaluation process

If a recipient matching the stated preferences cannot be found, the award will be given to an individual who most closely matches the stated preferences.

If interested, please fill out and return the application form linked below expanding on the two topics listed. These answers will be used to evaluate applicants based on the criteria stated by the donor.

Application deadline

Applications will be accepted starting August 1st. The deadline for submission is August 31st. Winners will be announced during the month of September.

About the scholarship

The Marilyn Ohm-Smith Pathology Student Scholarship Fund was established in 2024.

Marilyn Jean Ohm graduated from the University of Iowa Master of Science in Pathology Program in 1974. Her mentor was Franklin Koontz, and her thesis was titled “The effect of cephalosporin prophylaxis on women undergoing hysterectomy.”

Evaluation process

  1. Email announcement in August with instructions for how to apply.
  2. Applications to be returned to Gabe Young (gabriella-young@uiowa.edu) by 5 p.m. August 31st.

  3. Review by Scholarship Committee. The applications are judged by committee based on:
    1. Student financial need
    2. Student academic merit
    3. First-generation student status
    4. Challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances faced by the student.
  4. Announcement and email to winners in September.
  5. Pathology to provide payment to the winners.

Funds are to be used within one year of being awarded to student.
