This past September, medical students at the Carver College of Medicine had the opportunity to learn from and present research projects they worked on with their mentors at the Medical Student Research Conference.

Under the mentorship of Nitin Karandikar, MD, PhD, M1 student Aditya Joglekar, BS presented on his research project, “Interferon-gamma (IFNγ) – IFNγ Receptor axis controls the suppressor function of CD8 T-cells and effector resistance of CD4 T-cells.” Joglekar received the Richard G. Lynch Award for Excellence in Pathology Research for his research.

M2 student Quynh Pham, mentored by Shujie Yang, PhD, presented her research project, “Exploring the Mechanism of SETDB1 in Obesity-Enhanced Endometrial Cancer: A Pilot Study.” Pham received the Richard G. Lynch Award for Excellence in Pathology Research for her research. This research project was in collaboration with the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Richard G. Lynch Award for Excellence in Pathology Research is awarded to medical students to recognize outstanding pathology research in honor of Richard G. Lynch, MD. Dr. Lynch was a distinguished researcher, mentor, scholar, and the former Chairman of Pathology at the Carver College of Medicine and wrote the initial planning grant that resulted in the NIH designation of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
